Chlorine supply blamed for Mangaung's water dilemma─── BLAINE JONES 13:22 Thu, 20 Jan 2022
Issues with water supply to various parts of Bloemfontein have been attributed to the lack of chlorine supply from the manufacturing company.
According to the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM), the NCP Chlorchem manufacturing company is only operating at 50% capacity and the turn-around time is unknown.
The metro's spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, says the Maselspoort and Welbedacht Water Treatment Plants are under stress as the water demand is high. As a result, the water status in the city is extremely affected as reservoirs are drying up.
All regions in the metro - Thaba Nchu, Botshabelo, Dewetsdorp, Bloemfontein, Wepener and Soutpan - will allegedly be affected.
The MMM requested community members and stakeholders to use water sparingly. This includes not watering gardens nor washing cars, taking shorter showers or not filling bathtubs with too much water, and not using automated sprayers.
Khedama further says the situation is beyond their control and the matter has been escalated to the Department of Water and Sanitation.
