His political party, the ANC, says it’s saddened by the passing of former Police, Transport and Roads MEC, Butana Komphela. The ANC Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) spokesperson, Oupa Khoabane, says in a statement Komphela "shall be remembered for touching the lives of many citizens and his uncompromising stand to see the lives of the struggling masses changing for the better". Khoabane says at no point did Komphela ever disappoint in the mandate given to him by the ANC for any deployment responsibility he had to carry.

Khoabane says Komphela served the ANC in different capacities as a deployee since the advent of democracy.

"He became part of pathfinders that filled the trenches in establishing the local government system during the transitional period as the mayor of Kroonstad in the early 1990s. In the difficult period of apartheid, he immersed his energies in fighting the evil system that deprived the majority of citizens of South Africa of decent living. His activities landed him in detention on occasions but he never wavered in his conviction,” he adds.
