The EFF in the Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) on Wednesday opened a criminal case against former Municipal Manager (MM), Sello More.

The party followed through with its threat to slap More with criminal charges after an audio recording, believed to be More, allegedly soliciting a bribe from a service provider, recently emerged on social media and caused a stir.

On Wednesday, the red berets of the EFF, led by their regional party chairperson, Kgopolang Libate, opened a case of fraud and corruption. Lipale says the party will now push to remove More as the Head of Waste Management at the metro.

“We found an audio clip through a politician, so what is going to happen is that the police are going to investigate this. There is a gentleman on the audio who mentions companies where he is a 100% shareholder, therefore it is not going to be difficult for the police to find out who the source is. So it’s going to be easy for them, to find out who spoke with Mr More in the office, whereby Mr More was trying to solicit the money of which he said he wants to give it to some people he needs to basically assist,” he adds.

More is expected to issue a statement responding to allegations that he asked for a bribe from a service provider. Responding to OFM News' questions, More said he will shortly release a statement and believes that there is a witch hunt against him. More was removed from his post as the council's City Manager (CM), via a motion by the opposition, with the help of ANC councillors.

OFM News previously reported that, following his removal from office by council members, More then applied for urgent court action against the council.

More wanted the High Court to review and set aside the council’s decision, and to interdict the appointment of a new acting city manager. He says the decision by the council was not communicated to him. OFM News previously reported that a source said the motion to remove More was an irregular one since More is just an accounting officer and not a politician in council.

The source also told OFM News that what the council should have done, was to write to More and issue a letter to suspend him, pending an investigation. This source suspects that More was just used as a sacrificial lamb to settle a political score within the majority party in the council.
