SANBS still reeling from decline in donors due to #Covid19 | News Article

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is still reeling from the decline in the number of donors owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The SANBS’ head of donor relations in the Vaal area, Monique Schreiner, tells OFM News that the nation’s blood bank is experiencing a shortage of blood, with only 2.9 days’ worth of blood supply currently available. Schreiner says ideally, the SANBS aims to have 5 days’ worth of supply – particularly the O type. She encourages Central South Africans to pay a visit to their nearest donor centre or pop-up.

The head of donor relations says citizens should ask questions with respect to starting their donor journey. They’re present everywhere in Central South Africa, specifically mentioning Klerksdorp, the MooiRivier Mall in Potchefstroom, Kroonstad, and at the Vaalgate blood donor centre.

Schreiner stresses that there is no substitute for blood and it is therefore prudent that South Africans donate when possible. The most sought-after blood group is that of the rare O type, which is universal and can be donated to people with different blood types. The only problem is that this blood group can only receive O type in return.

The SANBS can be contacted on 0800 119 031 or www.sanbs.org for more.
