A political analyst from the University of the Free State (UFS), Sethulego Matebesi, says Thursday's State of Nation Address (Sona) by President Cyril Ramaphosa will be the same rhetoric statement made before.

He says South Africans should not expect anything new from the president in the early evening address at the Cape Town City Hall. He says the president will announce all sorts of plans about fighting corruption and improving service delivery across municipalities but there seems to be a lack of political will to implement all the plans.

Matebesi, however, says he refuses to single out president Ramaphosa for the lack of leadership.

“I am not going to single out President Cyril Ramaphosa. We should also understand that the programmes of the government do not change overnight and that’s why it seems as if the president repeats himself. I mean, some of the things that he spoke about during the ANC birthday celebrations or the January 8th statement, will be repeated tonight and that is acceptable. But where it becomes a huge problem is when you have a leader who has political aspirations of a second term, not taking action, because that then for me is unacceptable,” he adds.

Thousands of Free State residents, who often express their frustrations with the provincial government, will eagerly wait to hear if President Ramaphosa will announce any plans to solve some of their issues.

These issues include ongoing financial mismanagement, the lack of service delivery, and the deteriorating infrastructure across municipalities. His much-anticipated Sona comes after the State Capture Commission's chairperson, Raymond Zondo, handed over the second part of the report to him.

Matebesi says the implementation remains the biggest challenge for the government.
