NC municipality haunted by continuous cable theft─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 15:11 Wed, 16 Feb 2022
The Sol Plaatje Municipality in the Northern Cape continues to be frustrated by the daily occurrence of cable theft.
Recent incidents of cable theft in Cassandra have left larger parts of the city without electricity.
The Sol Plaatje Municipality indicates in a statement that it has joined hands with other stakeholders to address issues of cable theft, which constantly leads to medium voltage cable faults. This then leaves residents without electricity supply. The municipality states that it has recently been conducting patrols and has even been trying to use other methods to get suspects arrested, including illegal scrap metal dealers.
The municipality has also called on the legal system to provide harsher punishments for the deliberate destruction of infrastructure. The Sol Plaatje Municipality has also pledged to be proactive, especially in known hotspot areas.
OFM News previously reported that the municipal spokesperson, Sello Matsie, said it is facing issues of enormous infrastructure vandalism and theft. He said the thing that makes it difficult for municipalities to deal with criminals who are vandalising municipal infrastructure is that it is the same offenders who have been arrested and were released from prison.
