Free State serial rapist jailed for life─── 14:36 Wed, 23 Feb 2022
A Free State serial rapist has been slapped with a life sentence after luring 15 women with promises of jobs by pretending to be a successful businessman on Facebook, but instead raped them.
Free State police spokesperson Captain Phumelelo Dhlamini said Mokoena Petrus Nhlapo, 42, was unemployed when he went on a raping spree in 2015.
According to Dhlamini, Nhlapo raped 15 women after luring them with promises of jobs.
News24 reports he set up fake offices at different places.
He said Nhlapo's victims were aged between 20 and 22 years old and that all were raped at different places after he had conducted fake interviews with them.
Thirteen of his victims were from Lesotho and two from South Africa, said Dhlamini.
"He recorded a sex video with one victim then posted it on his Facebook account, which encouraged his victims to open rape cases against him."
Police Minister Bheki Cele says it's "deeply disturbing" and a "disgrace" that almost 10 000 people were raped in South Africa in just three months. Speaking at the release of the police's crime statistics for the period 1 July to 30 September 2021, the minister said 9 556 people were raped.
Asked why Nhlapo's victims never opened cases as they knew him, Dhlamini said he threatened to murder them if they did.
Nhlapo was arrested in June 2018 and was sentenced on Tuesday.
During sentencing, the judge said Nhlapo never showed remorse.
