After realising that most households have tampered with their electricity meter boxes, the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality in the Eastern Free State has come up with a solution.
The municipality decided to introduce a new method of inserting smart meters into each household to stop electricity fraud.
Shashapa Motaung, MMC for electricity and infrastructure at the municipality, says with this new method he believes residents will start buying electricity.
The campaign started at the De Bult in Qwaqwa on Wednesday morning and will cross over to other areas.
Meanwhile, the MMC has said no household will be charged when the municipal employees find an open meter box.
The municipality owes Eskom billions of rand.
