#WorldHearingDay: NW Health cautions against high sound levels─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 08:19 Thu, 03 Mar 2022
As people are on Thursday celebrating World Hearing Day under the World Health Organisation (WHO) theme: "To hear for life, listen with care", the North West Department of Health has cautioned people against high sound levels.
In a statement issued, the North West Health MEC Madoda Sambatha says the main objective of World Hearing Day is to prompt effective management of hearing loss and its prevention in communities. He says the main focus this year is on the importance of safe listening as a means of maintaining good hearing across the course of life. He says common causes of hearing loss can be prevented, including hearing loss associated with recreational sound exposure. Sambatha encouraged people to test for hearing regularly, stating that early diagnosis and intervention is key as it prevents further damage.
Sambatha urged individuals to protect themselves and family members by moving away from noise sources such as speakers, limiting or reducing the volume to neutral, and utilising ear protective devices.
