NC MEC hails Kimberley Diamond Cup─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:06 Sun, 06 Mar 2022
The Northern Cape MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, Desery Fienies, says competitions such as the Kimberley Diamond Cup (KDC) are meant to aid the province in unlocking the sporting potential of the youth.
The province, on Saturday, held the much-anticipated skateboarding competition, which featured both international and local skateboarders.
In an interview with OFM presenter, Alucius Mocumi, Fienies explained that such competitions will broaden access and increase the entry-level of youth in high-performance competitions like skateboarding.
"Our aim as the Northern Cape, [looking at] the future of this sport in our province, is to produce world-class sports stars by exposing young people of the Northern Cape to this high-level competition like [skateboarding].
"Our aim is to establish a holistic and sustainable development agenda through the creation of this enabling environment for young people, especially the youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, including young girls and young people with disabilities," she says.
In her interview with Mocumi, Fienies further explained that in future, skateboarding will be recognised by national and international bodies.
