Audiology centre opens in Free State─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 09:28 Sat, 12 Mar 2022
The Carel du Toit Special Primary School officially opened its doors in Bloemfontein, with the aim to help children with hearing loss to access mainstream education.
Carel du Toit principal, Carin Taute, has told OFM News that language development is of utmost importance, to improve children’s level of communication.
They will mostly focus on language education, in the hope that a child would be able to attend a mainstream school by Grade 3.
However, if that is not possible, the child will stay on at Carel du Toit.
Parents have the choice of whether their child will be taught in English or Afrikaans.
“All our learners have hearing loss, or they are completely deaf. Some have hearing aids, while others have implants. At the centre we teach them how to speak. Language will be their means of education - not signing. Our main aim is to place them into mainstream education as soon as possible. Thus, we follow the mainstream education programme.”
