According to North West Education spokesperson, Elias Malindi, the family reported that they last saw the 14-year-old Sedika Lekhobo (Mereekae) alive when she left her home on Saturday afternoon. Malindi says that police are investigating the cause of death. He also stressed gender-based violence (GBV) in the country is ongoing.

"The pandemic of gender-based violence against women and children is still rife amongst our communities. We wish police can find those behind this horrible death of this learner," he adds.

Malindi further sent heartfelt condolences to the bereaved Lekhobo and Mereekae family members.

OFM News previously reported that the Deputy Executive Mayor, Mapaseka Mothibi-Nkoane, had said that there is a need to intensify the fight against GBV and femicide.

She made her remarks during the Community Safety Forum workshop held at the Indaba Auditorium, which is aimed at addressing the safety and security issues in the city.
