The Deputy Executive Mayor of the Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality has once again reaffirmed her stance on the issue of gender-based violence (GBV), which continue to trouble society.

Deputy Executive Mayor, Mapaseka Mothibi-Nkoane, says there is a need to intensify the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide. She made her remarks during the Community Safety Forum workshop held at the Indaba Auditorium, which is aimed at addressing the safety and security issues in the city. In 2020, Mothibi-Nkoane, together with the ANC Women's League Mangaung Regional Chairperson, Olly Mlamleli, led scores of ANC women to the Free State High Court to raise concerns about the alleged delayed cases against suspects involved in the murder and rape of women and children.

Addressing different stakeholders on Thursday, Mothibi-Nkoane said she is passionate about the rights of women and children and the extreme violence against women and children calls for action.

OFM News reported in March 2021 that the Free State Premier, Sisi Ntombela, announced that at least 3,811 victims of gender-based violence (GBV) were provided with psychosocial support, with 167 women admitted to the safe house and five shelters.

Ntombela said at the time that to curb the scourge of GBV in the province, district coordinators have been appointed across five districts in the province. She also mentioned that the multi-sectoral Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Technical Committee has also been created.
