Mangaung sticks to Bloem Water payment ‘for the first time’─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 12:05 Fri, 25 Mar 2022
The Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality has for the first time adhered to its payment agreement with Bloem Water over its R1,2 billion debt.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bloem Water, Dimakatso Moorosi, informed members of the National Parliament and the Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Water and Sanitation in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Thursday in Bloemfontein, that this payment agreement came into effect three months ago following intervention by the Free State Premier, Sisi Ntombela, as well as the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo. Moorosi provided a brief background of the tug-of-war between Mangaung the water board.

“It's been a hectic exercise. We took one another to court and so on. There were payment plans that were never adhered to until the debt got to R1,2 billion,” explains Moorosi. It was then that Ntombela and Mahlobo intervened.
Moorosi also had to account to the select committee as to why there was no water supply in parts of Bloemfontein. She explained that problems were encountered on the back of scheduled maintenance at the Welbedacht pipeline last week. However, the water board’s employees have managed to remedy the pipe component that went faulty, resulting in emergency repairs that left the Free State capital without water for a second week.
Moorosi says water supply will return to normal by Friday, at the latest.
