The North West Health Department’s bill for legal fees for the 2020/21 financial year ran into millions and does not include claims against the department.
In an answer to a written question tabled in Parliament, the National Department of Health listed legal fees paid by all nine provincial departments.
The Health Department in North West paid more than R3,7 million, followed by the Northern Cape where the department’s bill was more than R2,8 million. The Free State Department’s total expenditure on legal fees amounted to more than R2,7 million.
The departments are not clear in which type of cases these legal fees were incurred and whether some involved disciplinary procedures against officials.
