Police spokesperson in the Free State, Mmako Mophiring, says residents discovered the baby on Saturday. He says that the baby's umbilical cord was still attached and the newborn was sent to the hospital to receive medical attention. "The baby is still at the hospital, healthy and in good condition," Mophiring said.

He  says the police were notified about the incident by the Thebe District Hospital in Harrismith on Saturday. Mophiring further adds that the police have since launched investigations into attempted murder.

He requested the public who may have information about the whereabouts of the mother to contact the Vrede Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit at 079-502-7871, or contact their nearest police station.
