Manhunt launched following ANC member’s murder | News Article

The police in North West have launched a man hunt after an ANC member was shot and killed whilst another was injured by a stray bullet.

According to police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone, officers in Mothotlung are investigating a case of murder and another of attempted murder.

OFM News previously reported that the ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee spokesperson, Kenny Morolong, confirmed this happened during a Branch Biennial General Meeting held in Mothutlong, Ward 20, in Madibeng on Sunday.

Allegedly two gun-wielding men wearing face masks shot at a male ANC member who was standing outside the venue.

Mokgwabone says it’s alleged that two occupants in a white BMW opened fire on the 38-year old man, who was certified dead on the scene.

Meanwhile, a 30-year old woman who was hit by a stray bullet was rushed to hospital.

Mokwgabone adds that the motive for the incident is unknown at this stage; no one has been arrested; and the investigation is currently still ongoing.

“Police would like to urge anyone who might have information that can assist in the investigation to contact the Investigating Officer, Detective Constable Tsholofelo Mohale on 082 373 9814 or the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Stop number: 08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can also be communicated via My SAPS Application. All information received will be treated with strictest confidentiality,”Mokgwabone adds.

Morolong announced that the ANC vehemently condemned the incident with all the disdain it deserves.

“This incident is regrettable as we expect all members of the ANC to conduct meetings in an environment that is pleasant, peaceful and devoid of any form of violence. Although the motive behind this attack is unknown at this stage, police investigations are ongoing, we are dumbtruck by this incident because - notwithstanding minimal and isolated incidents of violence in our BBGM’s - most of our meetings have been conflict-free,” Morolong added.

In 2021, four people were nabbed by the police in Swartruggens, following violence over the disputed ANC BGM.
