A North West ANC member has died after being shot whilst another is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.

According to the ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) spokesperson, Kenny Morolong, this happened during the Branch Biennial General Meeting held in Mothutlong, Ward 20, in Madibeng on Monday.

Morolong says the two gun-wielding men wearing face masks shot at a male ANC member who was standing outside the venue. He was certified dead on the scene. He says during the attack, a female member was also struck by a stray bullet and had to be rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. Morolong adds that this incident is regrettable. The police are yet to comment.

OFM News in 2021 reported that the ANC Bojanala’s Interim Regional Committee (IRC) deputy convenor, Abbia Modise, who was hospitalised after the attack in 2020, died at the Rustenburg Hospital.

“The ANC vehemently condemns this barbaric incident with all the disdain it deserves. This incident is regrettable as we expect all members of the ANC to conduct meetings in an environment that is pleasant, peaceful and devoid of any form of violence.

“Although the motive behind this attack is unknown at this stage, police investigations are ongoing, we are thunderstruck by this incident because notwithstanding minimal and isolated incidents of violence in our BBGM’s, most of our meetings have been conflict-free,” Morolong adds.

The shooting comes as the ANC in the province conducts the Branch General Meetings (BGMs) ahead of the regional and provincial conferences. In 2021, four people were nabbed by the police in Swartruggens, following violence over the disputed ANC BGM.

Morolong further adds that “we call on the entire leadership and membership of the ANC in the Madibeng sub region and the community at large with information that could assist the police investigation, to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies. The ANC in the province will continue to work closely with the police with a view of ensuring that those behind this vicious attack are apprehended.

Morolong has since conveyed the party’s heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the victims.

The ANC in the province is expected to hold its Provincial Elective Conference in line with the party guidelines, as the rest of the other provinces. This is despite several issues raised by irate ANC members from various regions in the province, including Matlosana in Klerksdorp.
