The North West province's controversial multimillion-rand Integrated Public Transport Network (IPTN) in Rustenburg is under the spotlight once again.

The project, which was set to be concluded a couple of years ago, is still not finished and was put to scrutiny this week when members of Parliament conducted an oversight to assess and inspect its progress.

The leader of the delegation in the Portfolio Committee on Transport, Lawrence McDonald, has since urged the Department of Transport to rescue the IPTN project.

McDonald adds that "it is unfortunate that the project is encountering the challenges it has had up to now, to the point of stalling the project to an almost state of decay, even before it is implemented".

The committee held a week-long visit to three provinces – North West, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal – to assess and oversee the state of roads and public transport infrastructure.

“The project implementation started way back in 2012 and should by now have been long handed over for full implementation and use by the communities.  It concerns the committee more that there are no timeframes in the work that is yet to be done to allow for full implementation. We are concerned and this is the work that the committee commits to see through to finality. The committee needs to consider a follow-up visit soon, as a lot could still go wrong," McDonald adds.
