Education under scrutiny at North West Legislature─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:33 Fri, 06 May 2022
The state of affairs at education in the North West will on Friday be laid bare before the Provincial Legislature's Committee on Education.
The province has recently been under scrutiny for its day-to-day running of business. The department previously raised a concern with the dwindling number of pupils enrolled across schools in the province and the dilapidated infrastructure of schools. During the meeting, financial management will also be in the spotlight.
In 2019, OFM News reported that the department forfeited its R125 million conditional grant for schooling infrastructure to the Eastern Cape Province.
It is also expected that the department will address an incident which took place in January this year where 162 school pupils at the Tirelong Secondary School left their accommodation at Boons Mega Farm School in a questionable manner.
At the time, the department claimed that drunk residents who pretended to be parents drove away in two combis, a half truck and a small bakkie, allegedly with 162 pupils.

Addressing the issue which gripped the education sector in that area, the Department of Basic Education's spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, told OFM News that the department had planned to intervene in the matter which troubled the North West Department of Education.
Mhlanga said the department will now beef up security to protect pupils at the Tirelong Secondary School.
