Workers affiliated with Numsa down tools in Vaal Triangle─── 15:12 Wed, 11 May 2022
Workers affiliated with the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) are having a protest action at Arcelor Mittal South Africa (Amsa) in Vanderbijlpark, in the Vaal Triangle, over salary increments.
The national strike action is also underway in Vereeniging, Pretoria, and KwaZulu-Natal.
Numsa national spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi Majola, tells OFM News that they are demanding a 10% salary increase for employees across the board, while Amsa is only offering a 5% salary increase and a 2% cash payment every month.
The demands also include an 80% medical aid contribution to employees, a housing allowance and the scrapping of Labour Brokers and insourcing of temporary employees.
Hlobi Majola adds Amsa can afford these demands, citing the company has been performing well during the two financial years of the lockdown pandemic.
