FS mayor and her co-accused back in court | News Article

The mayor of the troubled Theunissen-based Masilonyana Municipality, Dimakatso Modise, and her four co-accused charged with inciting violence will today re-appear in the town’s Magistrate Court.

The 47-year-old-Modise is the fifth accused after four others were arrested earlier this year for inciting violence.  In the resulting protest action, a house belonging to the parents of the then mayor, Kunatu Stephen Koalane, was set alight.

Modise and her co-accused, which includes a former speaker, councillor and office bearers are currently out on bail. Meanwhile,

DA member at the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), George Michalakis, has lauded Modise's arrest. Michalakis told OFM News that no citizen is above the law, and that it is vital that where proof exists, the law must be applied fairly and equally.

According to police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, the incident with which Modise is charged, relates to a period between 14 April and 30 June 2021. The ZR Makhabane road was barricaded with stones and rubbish and municipal offices were set alight. The house of the Mayor was also targeted and vehicles were pelted with stones.

OFM News has also reported that the Lejweleputswa ANC Youth League regional chairperson, Mokgethi Setlhalefo, has called for Modise, who is also the deputy regional coordinator of the interim structure, to do the right thing and step aside as per a decision taken at the ANC’s 54th 2017 Nasrec National Conference.
