Another ailing municipality fails to pay salaries | News Article

Yet another ailing Free State municipality has failed to pay its workers.

At least 450 workers of the Trompsburg based Kopanong Local Municipality are without salaries.

Municipal spokesperson, Solomzi Phama, confirmed to OFM News that workers were not paid, but plans to pay them are afoot.

He says they have engaged the provincial departments of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and Treasury respectively to come to their aid and bail them.

Much like the troubled Masilonyana municipality, Kopanong is citing a lack of cash flow for their failures.

OFM News earlier reported that Masilonyana also failed to pay salaries of workers this week.

Phama cites a lack of revenue collection due to the high number of unemployment in the municipality.

In 2021, OFM News reported that the financial crisis at the municipality was exacerbated by the attachment of the municipality's bank account by the Free State High Court, over the failure to pay pension fund contributions since 2012.

This debt ran into R26 million.

However, Phama, tells OFM News that the bank account issues have since been fixed and all is working in accordance.
