Ailing Free State municipality fires its manager | News Article

The Municipal Manager (MM) of the ailing Trompsburg based Kopanong Local Municipality in the Free State has been fired.

This comes only a few months after taking the reins from the ousted manager.

The municipal council reportedly fired Cecilia Pitso last week, both as Acting Municipal Manager (AMM) and Director of Corporate Services.

According to spokesperson Solomzi Phama, Pitso was fired following a legal consultation with the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), over the two contracts she had with the municipality.

Currently, the municipality is without an acting municipal manager. Pitso was appointed as AMM last year after Martin Kubeka's suspension, following the financial troubles at the municipality which left workers unpaid for at least three months.

On Tuesday the municipality confirmed it failed to pay its workers yet again, following cash flow problems blamed on among others a lack of revenue collection.

Phama says they have engaged the provincial departments of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and Treasury respectively to come to their aid and bail them out.

Kopanong municipality is one of few municipalities which appeared before the national council of provinces (NCOP) in March during a weeklong oversight on service delivery issues including water and sanitation amongst others.

The permanent delegate to the NCOP from the Free State, Itumeleng Ntsube, who chaired oversight visits to the Free State said chapter nine institutions such as the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) could be called to assist with allegations of mismangement.
