The Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Team based in Bloemfontein, in the Free State, has arrested two suspects aged 35 and 37 for allegedly defrauding the Department of Justice.
Hawks spokesperson in the Free State, Christopher Singo, says their investigation culminated in the arrest of the two suspects yesterday, after their team received a case docket from the police.
Singo says the two suspects, who worked as senior administrative clerks at the Warden Magistrates’ Court, allegedly defrauded the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development of third party funds received from clients of the department.
According to Singo, the alleged fraud took place between 2018 and 2020, resulting in a total loss of more than R1 million for the Justice Department.
He confirmed that the suspects are facing charges of fraud, theft, forgery among others, and they will appear before the Bethlehem Magistrate court today.
