The Free State Department of Education has called on the community to assist in finding the culprits who torched classrooms at Mphatlhalatsane Combined School in Makwane Village on Saturday.
According to departmental spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, four grade 7 classrooms were allegedly burnt down yesterday.
He says at the time of the fire, there was no electricity in the village. Ndaba says says that the school is now forced to go back to rotational model to avoid overcrowding.
Meanwhile Education MEC in the Free State, Tate Makgoe, said that he was shocked by the torching of the school.
In a statement, Makgoe said such acts hamper the province in terms of addressing challenges at schools.
He said they suspect that the culprits are known to the community, and called on residents to assist law enforcement agencies in bringing them to book.
He confirmed the principal of the school would be opening a criminal case today.
