Youth crime prevention committee combats crime in South Africa─── HEIDRÈ MALGAS 14:38 Fri, 01 Jul 2022
A national youth crime prevention committee has been established in South Africa, to identify the causes of youth violence and crime.
Lebohang Matlabe from Bloemfontein is making waves by being a representative for the Free State.
According to Matlabe, these youth prevention desks are volunteer-based at several police stations within the province.
“This encourages the youth to participate actively in identifying the causes of youth violence and crime, and to collaborate in creating social crime prevention [strategies] for their communities,” he said.
He added that this has been implemented because young people in South Africa are a key target group as both victims and perpetrators of crime.
“The key focuses of this committee are community policing, moral fiber investment, youth empowerment and economic opportunities as well as international relations,” he said.
These structures mainly consist of youth between the ages of 18 and 27, and this is to collaborate in creating social crime prevention activities with relevant stakeholders.
Matlabe said it may be a difficult task but maybe it’s about time people move beyond social media and become actively involved in matters that concerns the nation.
