Ntombela, MECs, mayors instructed to suspend accused HODs, officials | News Article

The Free State premier and all MECs have been instructed by the ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) to suspend and set aside officials charged with fraud and corruption.

ANC’s IPC Coordinator, Paseka Nompondo, has revealed that Premier Sisi Ntombela, MECs and mayors are instructed to take appropriate action in line with labour laws to suspend officials who are charged in the courts.

The call by the ANC in the province comes after numerous calls by the workers' trade union, the National Health Allied Workers Union (Nehawu), calling for the removal of the legally embattled Health Head of the Department (HOD), Godfrey Mahlatsi, who faces charges of fraud and corruption.

Mahlatsi was added as a suspect in an alleged tender fraud case worth R8 million dating back to when he was an accounting officer between 2014 and 2017.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Phaladi Shuping, previously said during the aforementioned period, Mahlatsi failed to take action over a tender that was flagged by the Auditor-General (AG).

“We are disgraced by the recent Auditor-General’s outcomes on municipal performance. The situation requires a drastic change and the IPC will hold the ANC deployees accountable for the deteriorating performance and effect necessary interventions. We are committed to improving the image and integrity of the ANC. This will be done in line with the 54th conference resolutions on organisational renewal,” Nompondo said.
