A 39-year-old man was shot twice in his stomach in Welkom.
The man was reportedly walking with his 43-year-old girlfriend on Sunday when the perpetrators allegedly tried robbing them.
SAPS Spokesperson Stephen Thakeng said the couple was walking in Theron Street in Reitzpark, Welkom, and were not attacked at a tavern. This clarity comes after social media reports that the incident happened at a tavern.
"They were apparently approached by an unknown African male person who attempted to rob the girlfriend and the boyfriend prevented the robbery. The same African man drew a handgun and shot the victim twice in his stomach. The girlfriend called the ambulance and he was admitted to a hospital."
Thakeng said a case of attempted murder has been opened and that the suspect has not yet been arrested. The South African Police Services made an appeal to anyone with information leading to the suspect to contact SAPS.
