Teaching to continue after #fire destroys Free State school─── 10:18 Mon, 25 Jul 2022
Plans to secure teaching and learning at the Intutuho Kathelo Secondary School in Vrede, in the Free State, have been identified, while the Education Department plans to rebuild the school.
Education spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, told OFM News that the Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, will be meeting with the school’s management, school’s governing body (SBG), the district management team, district mayor, local municipal mayor, and the local policing leadership.
Ndaba said the purpose of the visit is to establish facts on what caused the fire and to also find a way to rebuild the school and establish a way forward.
“In Vrede, there are three high schools, including Intutuho Kathelo Secondary School, which has been burned. Intutuho Kathelo Secondary School has been burned to ashes, there’s nothing left. Only three out of 25 classes are left, so there is no school there as the infrastructure has burned down. So what we have done is taking these learners to the [other] two schools so that they can at least continue with learning and teaching. We will be able to give an indication of the way forward after we have met all the stakeholders today.”

Ndaba said teachers will also be moving to the two identified schools with the learners, as they will be occupying vacant classrooms at those schools, instead of being mixed with other learners. He further said he assured the parents that this is not the end of the academic year for their children.
