Free State municipality given three days to withdraw court order - VIDEO | News Article

Residents of Makeleketla near Winburg, part of the Theunissen-based Masilonyana Local Municipality, have issued the cash-strapped municipality with a three-day deadline to withdraw notices to evict residents in that area.

Disgruntled residents protested outside the office of the municipality. Scores of irate residents joined in for the demonstration after the municipality decided to effect a 2019 court order allowing the municipality to implement its planned eviction of residents at an area known as Zola in Makeleketla, who are allegedly occupying a piece of land illegally. The demands from the residents to the municipality include that the municipality should declare the affected area as a residential area and should also withdraw the court order within three days.

Community leader, Mpholo Moshe, previously said for the past 20 years the said municipality has failed to allocate sites for residents and as a result, people have struggled to get proper housing from the government. The municipality has since committed to respond to OFM News’ inquiry.

“We are giving the municipality three days to respond because this is an urgent matter, since we are left with only four days to leave, whereafter we can be evicted according to the court order. We hope the municipality will take a sober decision and do the right thing,” the memorandum reads.

The affected residents say the court order gives them a mere 15 days to leave the area.
