Incident was not ‘kidnapping’ – North West police | News Article

The North West police have refuted claims that a woman was kidnapped by two men in Potchefstroom.

Police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, has since given an explanation of pictures doing the rounds on social media, suggesting a kidnapping incident in Potchefstroom on Wednesday in broad daylight.

Myburgh says following a thorough investigation by the police in that area, which includes an interview with the woman, it was discovered that the driver of the vehicle and the woman had an argument. As a result, she then jumped out of the moving vehicle. The driver and another man then took her back to the car. Myburgh says the police did have an opportunity to question the woman involved and it was discovered that there was no foul play. No criminal case is being investigated.

These pictures on social media are seemingly panicking a lot of media users, with the question of safety being discussed again. The killing of women and children has been condemned by the public and the police have somehow found themselves at the receiving end of harsh criticism for allegedly failing to deal with or curb the crime against women.

“This was not a kidnapping case as initially indicated. The police on Wednesday followed up on leads and it ultimately led them to the woman who was allegedly kidnapped. It was determined that she and the driver of the vehicle had an argument and she jumped out of the vehicle whilst it was still moving. She was then put back into the vehicle. There was no other vehicle involved during this incident and she since went to the doctor just to make sure that she was not injured. It has since been revealed that she had not sustained any injuries during the incident. At this stage, there is no investigation. The police saw her and she is well and healthy,” Myburgh adds.
