Former mineworkers in the North West will breathe a sigh of relief following the planning of a project that is set to be launched in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District municipality this coming Thursday.

The project will be launched under the theme “The Restoration of Social Justice and Dignity of Ex-mineworkers in the North West Province”. The provincial Department of Health spokesperson, Keletso Ratlhagane, says the project will enable about 170 000 former mineworkers and their beneficiaries in the North West to access unpaid benefits, including compensation for occupational diseases, injuries and other unpaid social protection benefits.

Ratlhagane adds that the value of each claim will depend on an individual assessment conducted, while families of the deceased beneficiaries are also invited to lodge claims on their behalf. She says due diligence will prevail to ensure that funds are paid to the rightful people.

Ratlhagane says the provincial launch will be the start of district activities that will today commence at the West Vaal Hospital in Orkney. She further adds that the activities will witness the intake of the first batch of identified ex-mineworkers undergoing medical assessments for the possible lodging of claims. Ratlhagane concludes that the project roll-out to the Bojanala, Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati and Ngaka Modiri Molema Districts will take place between 21 August and 4 October 2022.
