Arrested Ventersburg protesters expected in court | News Article

The three people who were arrested after a protest on the N1 at Ventersburg, are expected to appear in court on Tuesday 27 September 2022.

SAPS spokesperson, Peter Kareli, says they will be appearing before the Ventersburg Magistrate’s Court, and are facing charges of public violence.

“What happened was that the members (of SAPS) were trying to clear the road and remove barricades so that traffic can flow freely, but these community members were throwing stones at the SAPS members.

“These members are also part of the community who refused to honour an order by the SAPS to disperse from the protected scene.”

Kareli says the police arrested a 42-year-old woman and two men, aged 31 and 37.

Kareli says the police plead with irate community members to refrain from acts of violence, as it is a transgression of the law.

Police spokesperson Loraine Earle added the protest started on Monday morning, 26 September 2022, due to the community not having water for several weeks now. She further advised motorists to use alternative routes.
