Northern Cape residents encouraged to undergo eye test─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 08:51 Sat, 15 Oct 2022
The Northern Cape Department of Health is set to dispense over 400 spectacles for free to people with visual impairment.
This follows in the wake of World Eyesight Day on Thursday 13 October 2022.
The departmental spokesperson, Lebogang Majaha, says during this and next weekend (22 - 23 October 2022), they will be collaborating with Black Mountain Mine and the South African National Council for The Blind to conduct cataract surgery camps at Kleinsee hospital in the Namakwa District.
Majaha further adds that between April 2021 and March 2022, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital's eyecare services did several surgeries, despite the impact of Covid-19.
Four hundred and sixty-three cataract surgeries were performed from April 2021 to March 2022.
This is despite the impact of Covid-19, which had a negative impact due to reduced theatre time.
One thousand three hundred and fifty-seven spectacles were issued.
“The hospital’s centre of Ophthalmology is operating optimally to offer eyecare services as per the needs of the client," Majaha said.
He further urged people to have their eyes tested through the campaign and beyond. He also thanked the One Sight Foundation, a non-profit organisation, for donating equipment valued at R2 million to the Dr Harry Surtie Hospital in Upington and the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley.
