Adelaide Madlongolwane - the last born of ANC struggle stalwart Evelyn Debryn and Gideon Madlongolwane, who were part of the Upington 14 that were sent to death row in the eighties - says that her decision stems from being side-lined by the party.

She alleges that some officials from the party have used her late parents’ names for the benefit of the party, by renaming some of the areas or building without consulting the family.

Madlongolwane says it’s unfortunate that she will be removing the images of her parents from the Upington 26 monument at a time when the president of the country will be visiting the area in the coming week.

Madlongolwane explained that her parents might have suffered more than other struggle stalwarts who benefited immensely from the party, as they were already elderly when they were sent to prison.

Madlongolwane - a single parent - says her family is totally disillusioned with local politicians.

She expressed her anger by stating that they are forgotten as children of the struggle.
