Police are investigating the deaths of four children who apparently died of suffocation after being stuck inside an old car in Petsana near Reitz on Wednesday.
The provincial police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring, says that on Wednesday, 26 October 2022, at about 17:00, police received a call from a house in Petsana where children were trapped inside a car.
He explains that on their arrival, police found three boys and a girl laying next to a silver Volvo S40 sedan. All the children were certified dead.
According to Mophiring, the children were last seen playing outside at about 11:30 under the supervision of their 72-year-old grandmother.
When the grandmother later went to look for her grandchildren, she could not find them until about 16:30, when one of the family members found them unconscious inside an old car.
He adds that they tried to open the doors of the car but they were locked from the inside, They forcefully opened them, took the children out and called emergency personnel.

According to Mophiring, when emergency medical services arrived on the scene, the three-year-old Lesedi Mguni, three-year-old Jwalane Goodness - who are cousins, two-year-old Lerato Donald Tshabalala and four-year-old Mojalefa Mokoena, were all declared dead.
The police have opened an inquest docket. Mophiring adds that the 72-year-old grandmother of the four deceased children was deeply shocked by the incident.
