’Flagship theatre lacks decisive leadership’ - DA─── HEIDRÈ MALGAS 12:20 Sun, 06 Nov 2022
Although the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State (PACOFS) is meant to be the focal point of theatre activities in the Free State, it is obvious that the organisation lacks strong leadership that can carry out its responsibilities.
This is according to Veronica van Dyk, the DA's Shadow Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture.
The party requested that Pacofs appear before the committee right away in a letter to Beauty Dlulane, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts, and Culture.
“Additionally, we requested a supervisory visit because the committee had received multiple letters from sources stating that an investigation needed to be given top priority,” adds Van Dyk.
She adds that the fact that the council appears to have broken its vow to execute the recommendations in the Bonakude and Morar forensic findings, is particularly alarming.
Furthermore, she says it is shocking that some of the implicated people allegedly received golden handshakes and promotions to top positions despite the fact that the forensic studies clearly exposed the corruption and malpractice at the organisation.
Van Dyk adds that the Auditor-General (AG) noted that there is a lack of consequence management in the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture's (DSAC) entities, and that Pacofs is a prime example of this.
Additionally, the DA asked DSAC for a monitoring and assessment report on how the Bonakude and Morar findings had been implemented.
“Every day, it becomes more and more obvious that probes into corruption and bad administration are nothing more than public relations gimmicks meant to divert attention away from the ongoing plunder and a lack of consequence management,” adds Van Dyk.
