North West uncle remains in custody for alleged murder of infant | News Article

The North West uncle who was arrested for allegedly murdering a five-month-old baby has remained in custody after his case was postponed by the Leeudoringstad Magistrate’s Court.

The 38-year-old Lazarus Chaka Hambone appeared before the court on Tuesday 8 November 2022.

The North West National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, says a 16-year-old mother of a five-month-old infant had an argument with Hambone on Saturday 5 November 2022, while carrying the baby on her back. He says the accused went outside and came back with a spade, and tried to assault his niece, but ended up hitting the five-month-old baby boy. Mamothame adds that the baby was taken to a local clinic where he was transported to the Wolmaransstad Hospital. He was ultimately transferred to the Tshepong Hospital where he died due to his head injuries. He adds that the suspect was apprehended for the murder of the baby and appeared in court.

“The Leeudoringstad Magistrate's Court postponed the murder case against Lazarus Chaka Hambone to 16 November 2022, for a formal bail application. The state will oppose bail as the accused is a parolee of a murder case that occurred in 2011,” adds Mamothame.

He further adds that the accused has appointed an attorney from Legal Aid to represent him while he will remain in police custody until his next court appearance.
