Public requested to hand over dangerous dogs | News Article

The Bloemfontein Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has requested the public to surrender any dog that may imperil the lives of the community, the families or owners of dogs.

This is after the death of an 8-year-old boy who was mauled by a Pit Bull in Vista Park, Bloemfontein, on Saturday 12 November 2022. Members of the South African Police Services responded to the incident and due to the unique circumstances, the Pit Bull was shot.

According to the Head Inspector at the SPCA in Bloemfontein, Reinette Meyer, two other dogs at the premises were removed and are now with the SPCA for safekeeping.

Dog owners who think their dogs might be a risk to other people, are requested to hand over their dogs at the Bloemfontein SPCA, which is situated at 25 McGregor East End Bloemfontein and/or contact SPCA at 051 447 3801 or 078 322 8332 respectively.

Meyer further states that the SPCA will make collection services available to any owner who does not have the means to take aggressive animals to the SPCA directly.

“The loss of life, any life, is tragic and in a preventive measure, we would like to plead with the public that aggressive animals should be surrendered to the Bloemfontein Society so that similar incidents do not occur - and that even at the end of an aggressive animal’s life,” concludes Meyer.
