Cable theft costs Northern Cape municipality close to a million─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 05:47 Tue, 15 Nov 2022

The continuous onslaught of cable theft has cost the Kimberley-based Sol Plaatje Municipality close to a million rand.
According to the municipal spokesperson, Thoko Riet, the latest incident caused floods on the subway in Hull Street, resulting in motorists not being able to use the road.
She does, however, add that the municipality dispatched engineers to the scene, an inspection of the Hull Street subway was performed, and the pumps were found to be fully operational. Riet says the municipality condemns the relentless attacks on municipal infrastructure and further states that cable theft has a huge impact on service delivery.
"To all our residents, in this year alone, the municipality has lost over R750 000 due to vandalism. Without question, cable theft hampers service delivery progress and resources on the part of the municipality and its consumers. The municipality therefore advises motorists to rather make a detour and to always remain cautious when using the road," she said.

Riet goes on to say that warning signs will be installed in all three subways near municipal intersections to warn motorists of potential danger. She also says that the municipality will work closely with the police to ensure that culprits are brought to book. Residents have also been urged to report culprits and guard against vandalism.
