Ageing infrastructure a concern at Free State military bases | News Article

Ageing infrastructure is one of the concerning issues that have been noted during a recent oversight visit by Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans military bases in the Free State.

The committee recently completed a three-day tour of military bases in Bloemfontein, ending with a visit to the Tempe military base.

According to a statement issued by the Chairperson of the committee on Defence and Military Veterans, Cyril Xaba, different units raised concerns about aged infrastructure which they’re still forced to use.

According to Xaba, other issues raised include a lack of funding for maintenance and upgrades to equipment. Xaba further adds that during their visit to three military hospitals, the committee discovered that maintenance issues continue to plague health facilities due to a lack of coordination with the Department of Infrastructure.

He, however, adds the committee has resolved to take up the issues affecting the military and work together with the Departments of Defence and of Public Works and Infrastructure.

Xaba concluded that the committee is happy with the fruitful engagements it had with members of the armed forces, who shared their various successes and challenges.
