JDP, government's Christmas gesture to assist Jagersfontein victims─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:00 Thu, 22 Dec 2022
A Christmas gesture from the Free State Government and the Jagersfontein Development Project (JDP) intends to bring a little relief and joy to the victims of the disaster-stricken Jagersfontein.
About 170 families were affected by the collapse of the mine dam wall which killed people and left others destitute.
On Wednesday 21 December 2022, Premier Sisi Ntombela deployed a team of administrative heads (HODs) and senior management officials to engage with the affected residents and give them feedback on the progress made in restoring the area.
Residents were also given an opportunity to address issues that continue to affect them and find a way forward in resolving any prevailing challenges.
According to the statement issued by the Provincial Government, the mine, in partnership with the Provincial Government, donated Christmas vouchers worth R2 500 to be used at any retail stores, excluding liquor outlets.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) gave affected families a R1900 once-off saviour grant and R3800 to those who lost their loved ones during the disaster.
Last month, Ntombela, in partnership with Gift of the Givers, handed out food parcels to 500 families. Ntombela said that they felt that it was only right to come back to the town and hand over food parcels to the victims.
