North West ward councillor arrested for alleged stock theft─── 08:36 Mon, 26 Dec 2022
A newly elected ANC councillor of ward 16 in Bakerville outside Litchenburg in the Ditsobotla local municipality, has been arrested for alleged stock theft.
This comes after about 24 sheep were reported stolen.
The councillor is alleged to be involved in what is suspected to be planned celebrations.
North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, told OFM News that an investigation by members of the Sannieshof Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit led to the arrest of three men in possession of suspected stolen goods.
He said the suspects were arrested on Thursday afternoon after police searched two private dwellings in Bakerville and found two sheep carcasses.
The latter was positively identified through tattoos and confirmed to be part of the 24 sheep allegedly stolen between 17 and 18 December 2022, on a farm in the area of Bakerville.
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) spokesperson, Fanon Moema, said they commend the intervention by law enforcement agencies and whistleblowers in the matter.
Moema added that they will be attentive to the developments of this case to ensure that the accused does not enjoy any impunity.
Mokgwabone confirmed to OFM News that two other suspects were arrested together with another man whose cell phone was found in the kraal where the sheep were stolen.
"Investigation into the matter is underway and all three suspects aged 27, 34 and 37 are expected to appear before the Litchenburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday 28 December 2022," said Mokgwabone.
