The newly elected National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) is set to address the Mangaung Metro Council's deepening divisions and factionalism.

During a media briefing in the build-up to the party’s 111th year anniversary celebration that will be held in Bloemfontein on 8 January 2023, newly elected secretary general Fikile Mbalula said that the NEC will meet with the Free State Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) in Mangaung to deal with the "anarchy".

ANC members in the Metro's council previously voted with the opposition parties against some of their members.

The ANC in the Free State also failed multiple times to hold its planned elective provincial conference, which was supposed to take place before the ANC's 55th national conference.

"Part of the issues that we are going to deal with in Mangaung is that of anarchy, where ANC members are doing as they wish. They must be told, whoever they are, that the holiday is over. There will be no ANC member in this country in the future who will be permitted to work with the opposition in our name without the organisation's mandate.

"That is anarchy, that is a state of disorder," said Mbalula.

Mbalula further said that members who do not abide by the laws of the party will be disciplined.
