16-year-old boy drowns in Free State  | News Article

Free State police have retrieved the body of a 16-year-old boy who drowned in Welkom on Wednesday 4 January 2023.

According to the provincial police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, the unfortunate drowning took place at about 13:10 while a group of boys were swimming in a dam of water next to the railway between Bronville and Thabong.

Police were called to the scene shortly after the incident and the SAPS diving unit retrieved the body of the 16-year-old boy who had been certified dead by the Emergency Medical Services. Thakeng adds that the father of the child was on the scene and identified the deceased as Karabo Mokgwabo.

"Parents are advised to sternly warn their children not to swim in quarries or any pool of water caused by rain, as it is dangerous, especially when they do not know how to swim," he said.

Thakeng further said that police have registered an inquest for further investigations.
