Four people were arrested in Majwemasweu, soon after the discovery of the body of a 75-year-old man in his house in Brandfort.

On 19 January 2023, at about 09:00, a domestic worker alerted the police after she found the deceased in a pool of blood.

According to a police statement, the deceased sustained a wound to his head and it is suspected that a blunt object was used. Emergency Medical Service personnel were summoned to the scene and he was certified dead.

A case of murder was registered and acting on information received, a house was identified in Majwemasweu where three suspects and the house owner, who is a traditional healer, were found.

The house was searched and a cell phone belonging to the deceased, as well as an unlicensed .22 calibre Star pistol, were found and seized. The traditional healer was found in possession of the unlicensed firearm.

The three arrested suspects, aged 21, 23 and 31, and the 38-year-old traditional healer, are facing charges of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm. They will appear in the Brandfort Magistrate’s Court on Monday 23 January 2023.

The Free State provincial commissioner, Baile Motswenyane, applauded the SAPS members for arresting these four suspects so soon after the murder.
