The North West provincial government is mourning the death of late struggle veteran Paul Daphne, who passed away on Friday, 28 January 2023 after a short illness.

The spokesperson for the Premier, Sello Taitai, says Premier Bushy Maape described Daphne as "ethical, incorruptible and relentless in his advocacy for a free and equal society".

Daphne was elected as secretary for the ANC's first branch in Mahikeng. His activism led to his deportation from then-Bophutatswana; however, he continued with his political work, which included giving support to 160 political prisoners who were incarcerated by the Bophutatswana administration.

Maape says that the passing of Daphne is a great loss not only to his family but also to the people of North West and the country. Maape further described him as someone who dedicated his entire life to the struggle for a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic South Africa and a committed activist who championed the socio-economic rights of the poor.

Daphne is survived by his fiancee, Disa Ramagaga, his children and foster children.
