Student leaders arrested for contravening court order─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:18 Sat, 18 Feb 2023
Two student leaders who were arrested by the Bloemfontein police at the University of the Free State (UFS) are set to face charges related to the contravention of a court order.
They were arrested on Friday 17 February 2023.
According to police spokesperson, Thabo Covane, the order included interdicts barring students from participating in unlawful protest action at the University.
The order also indicated they should not instigate disorderly behaviour that may result in damage to university property.
Covane added the arrested students, aged 23 and 25 respectively, will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court soon.
Students are up in arms demanding that issues related to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) be resolved.
The EFF Student Command led Student Representative Council (SRC) also alleges that students have not yet received NSFAS clearance text messages.
Recently, the Motsepe Foundation donated R30 million to 26 universities across the country - including UFS.
The foundation gifted the university R1,3 million rand. It says the donated money will go towards student registration, fees, and historical debt.
