The Free State Provincial Government has been criticised over the slow-paced efforts in rebuilding the homes of victims of the Jagersfontein mine dam disaster.
On 11 September 2022, Jagersfontein become the centre of attention for many people. The disaster following the collapsed mine dam wall left many destitute while two people lost their lives. It's understood that residents are still displaced in private homes, while others stay at residences hired by the mine.

Speaking to OFM News at one of the houses built last year by the provincial government as a sample, community leader Lefa Shale criticised the government for dragging its feet to help affected victims to rebuild their lives. He said he was frustrated with the government for disappearing after building a sample house, which he deemed as insulting to residents as it is very small.

“It has plus or minus been five months since the disaster and the process of building houses has not yet started. As you can see, this is only the show house which can accommodate two people. Unfortunately, the delays and whatever is happening in Jagersfontein... really, really, the community is disappointed because not even one house has been built [for them],” Shale said.
The spokesperson of the Kopanong Local Municipality, Solomzi Phama, previously stated that the Mayor of Kopanong has been having several meetings with victims who have been affected by the mudslide. It was understood that the mine was ready to build homes for the victims.
